Bridge International Academies is the world’s largest chain of primary and pre-primary schools with more than 300 academies and 100,000 pupils in Kenya. We democratize the right to succeed by giving families living in poverty access to the high-quality education that will allow their children to live a very different life. We leverage experts, data, and technology in order to standardize and scale every aspect of quality education delivery, from how and where academies are built to how teachers are selected and trained, and how lessons are delivered and monitored for improvement. We are vertically-integrated, tech-enabled, and on our way to profitability. Bridge expects to continue rapid expansion in Kenya, and will be launching operations in Uganda and Nigeria in 2015.
People Operations at Bridge
People are at the core of what we do, from the teachers in our academies to software developers building our tech platform – and we do it at massive scale with rapid growth. The People Operations team is the key in unlocking “people potential” towards achieving our company’s goals. We believe in:
- Focusing on operational excellence and execution – we want to make our employees’ and their managers’ lives simpler, and give them the tools and support to be successful. We must excel first and foremost on service delivery.
- Using analytics/data to drive key decisions and continuous improvement – across core HR competencies like compensation, performance, talent, we believe that an analytical approach will enable us to attract, reward, and retain top performers.
- Aligning with the company’s strategic objectives – we are all playing for the same team. The human resources function, along with finance, operations, legal, and other functional areas, should be fully in sync.
Position Overview
We are looking for an operationally focused, relentlessly driven star to lead our People Operations across Kenya and Uganda. This is a high-impact role for someone who loves challenges – Bridge has scaled from 2 to more than 4,200 full-time employees in less than five years, and will be expanding to multiple countries in the next twelve months. You will be laser focused on motivating and retaining our best staff, and will work to ensure that our service delivery positively impacts all staff – particularly those who work tirelessly in our academies.
The ideal candidate comes from a strong commercial background – we are NOT looking for a traditional HR background. You may have retail, operations, or consulting experiences, with a strong track record managing organisations and people in very fast-paced environments. You are energetic, tireless, relentless, and you are comfortable dealing with people of all backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Ensure top-notch global People Operations service delivery. This means ensuring that all processes that touch employee needs are running smoothly. This including employee onboarding (sometimes more than a thousand employees at once), handling the employee lifecycle, payroll, and leave management
- Execute on a data-driven approach across all People Operations activities. You will work closely with technology to leverage our systems and data most effectively
- Align company processes and policies with best practices and employment/labor regulations in all countries of operation
- Execute on performance and talent initiatives and resource planning
- Supervise the Administration Manager to ensure smooth Administration operations
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business or other related field with top academic marks; MBA/grad degree a plus
- Minimum of ten years of significant leadership experiences in operational roles for rapidly scaling companies
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Strong analytical thinker, ideally with previous experience in board commercial and operational areas
- Self-starter; highly driven individual that will take ownership from the get-go and proactively look for improvement
- Emerging markets experience a major plus
- Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to work with a very diverse workforce
