The Coca-Cola Company Job Vacancy in Kenya : Safety Manager

JOB SUMMARY:



  • Drive the Implementation of The Coca-Cola Company requirements KORE (Occupational Safety & Health) or ISO equivalent in the Bottling Plants, Distribution centers and market place and ensuring 100% compliance to Company and BU Occupational Safety & Health related Policies, requirements and specifications.

  • Drive safety performance of the Business Unit to minimize risks, maximize opportunities and enhance reputation for the system. Special focus on occupational safety and health practices

  • Support BU QSE Managers in the implementation of plant and fleet safety BU Strategy

  • Coach and lead the QSE Improvement team in the BU and optimize their activities so that they can positively and significantly impact safety performance results.


KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:



  1. Oversee, monitor and track Annual safety and stewardship Improvement Plans for each bottling plant and Co-Packer in the Business Unit in order to:



  • Accelerate the improvement of plant and fleet safety performance indicators

  • Implement fleet top 10 in all the plants and distribution centers

  • Accelerate the implementation and monitoring ofKORE, Compliance and ISO 18001 certificationin the Bottling Plants, Distribution centers and Market place.

  • Ensure safety data is entered on time into SDW database

  • Accelerate occupational safety & health related performance indicators and regularly evaluating the effectiveness of the plan and adjusting it as needed.


2. Set stretch safety goals for bottling plants, distribution centers and Co-packers and a detailed plan for their achievement for the following performance indicators: LTIR, Fatalities, near misses, etc

3. Evaluate business technical risks across the value chain processes including suppliers, bottlers, Co-Packers and distribution and develop and implement required action plans to ensure full compliance to Company Policies and requirements so that potential risks are prevented.

4. Ensure annual Full Safety assessment is done for all the bottling plants, sound CAP is entered into ETQ MS and support BU Systems Program Manager in the tracking of CAP closure.

5. Develop lead indicators in the area of safety for the plants and DC. Implement those and ensure effective tracking process.

6. Contribute to a continuous and effective coordination process with the other BU Technical team functions (KORE implementers, Technical Services & Commercialization, etc) so that the efforts from different players converge to the ultimate objectives set by the Business Unit.

7. Lead and manage the safety function and ensure full integration of all safety aspects and requirements into Bottler and Franchise improvement plans.

8. Be single point of contact within the franchise on all aspects of occupational safety & health.

9. Prioritize the implementation of the Safety Programs and Techniques in the manufacturing sites and distribution centres so that the cycle of continuous improvement is built in the system.

10. Understand the communication needs of the BU management, and issue the appropriately focused safety reports. This in order to provide senior management with the required information on safety performances of our BU.

11. Provide input and support to product launches. Support risk assessment process in safety aspects QSExD process.

12. Create safety ownership at all levels of the bottler through setting up the necessary awareness programs and management routines.

13. Closely work with the QEOSHM’s and their bottling plants to identify training needs for both BU Safety Improvement staff and bottler staff and provide direction and support in order to achieve high standards and excellence at the plants. Prioritize the development areas based on the business need e.g.: Safety improvement tools, Top 10, etc.

14. Lead, coach and supervise the Safety Improvement team, sets their goals and evaluates their performance.

15. Responsible for the improvement of all Safety Metrics, the implementation of Management Systems (ISO), Risk Management Process, etc..

1. Senior Management of the bottling plants and Co-Packers across business unit:

Through QEOSHM’s ensure Bottlers are informed about the Company Policies & requirements / their QSE performance / any QSE issues


2. Franchise GM, Country managers, BU Technical Director, BU Stewardship Manager, PAC Director, Legal Counsel:

Keeping them informed on the latest updates on Safety performance & issues and their resolution, potential technical risks on the business, plants and suppliers audits results and corrective action plans status, required resources and initiatives.

Reported, track the CAP until full completion of the actions.


3. QSE Improvement Colleagues:

Leading, coaching and supervising the team so that they can achieve their goals.

4. Other Technical Team Colleagues:

Work closely with team members in order to improve bottler stewardship performance and improve the overall governance;


5. Government departments:

To verify requirements and where necessary secure concessions.

RELATED JOB REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS:


Technical Skills:



  • Beverage Manufacturing: Knowledge of and ability to apply carbonated and non-carbonated beverage processing techniques (e.g., proportioning, carbonating, syrup manufacturing, filling).

  • Good Manufacturing Practices: Knowledge of the basic elements of Good Manufacturing Practices. This includes understanding of Company and regulatory guidelines.

  • Production Processes: Knowledge of syrup and beverage manufacturing processes. These include blending solids, blending liquids or juices, carbonation, filling, water treatment, packaging, cleaning and sanitation, or refrigeration technologies.

  • Problem Analysis/ Problem Solving: Forming an opinion or making a decision through careful testing of assumptions and facts; taking action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.

  • Safety Principles: Identifies and clearly articulates the processes and safety assurance activities needed in the manufacturing, DC and fleet

  • Ingredients & Auxiliary Materials: Knowledge of ingredients and auxiliary materials used in beverage manufacturing.

  • Risk Analysis/Management: Knowledge of and ability to manage the risk analysis/management process consisting of four components: Risk Monitoring, Risk Assessment, Risk Management and Risk Communication.

  • Basic Project Management: Knowledge of project management principles and the ability to apply the principles, tools and techniques to develop/plan, manage or execute projects or work plans to ensure successful completion (e.g. on time, within budget).

  • Building Technical Relationship: Ability to apply technical knowledge and establish credibility with highly technical internal or external contacts in order to build technical relationships that will benefit customers or the company.

  • KORE : Knowledge and application of policies, principles and standards of KORE in order to ensure consistent safety, protect the Company’s trademarks, promote customer and consumer satisfaction and respond to changing business needs.

Required Experience 8 to 10 years’ experience in the Safety Area in food, chemicals or pharmaceutical industry.


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor degree or equivalent in Safety, engineering or related disciplines with relevant safety management experience.

Conversant with ISO 9001 and OHSAS18001 standards and auditing courses.

Proficiency in English and French.


CULTURAL DIVERSITY:

Responsibility and Interaction with: multi cultural/lingual environment. Fluency in English and French


ANALYSIS:



  • Will deal with small plants (low sales volume) that can not afford heavy investment in production and warehousing.

  • Occupational safety awareness is rather poor in some bottling plants and need great efforts to be upgraded.

  • Resistance to change in some bottling plants and DC

  • Under-skilled bottling/fleet personnel requiring basic education.

  • Resistance in collection of safety data and development of sound improvement processes

  • Poor operating systems – problem solving process not well defined. Must create and implement appropriate approaches for systems implementation that will enhance monitoring and control within bottlers organizations.

  • Poor maintenance and historical under-investment culture – New skills and techniques have to be introduced gradually as maintenance systems are being put in place. This offers major challenges.


JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING:



  • Assist Bottling plants and the BU Technical Stewardship Manager in preparing and following the execution of the Bottler Annual Quality Business Plan and support Technical initiatives.

  • Participate with the BU Technical Stewardship Manager in elaborating the safety part of the Business Plan and set up implementation plan for occupational safety & health Improvement.


WORKING CONDITIONS :



  • As per assigned territory.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Significant travel required: 50% to 60% of time, most requiring overnight stays
