JOB SUMMARY Three randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that Male Circumcision has partial protective effect of up to 60% against heterosexual acquisition of HIV. In order to achieve the intended public health impact, as many uncircumcised men need to be circumcised within the shortest time possible. The current conventional techniques take long and in a set up where human resource is already stretched to the limit, this can proves burdensome.


EngenderHealth in collaboration with Cornell University and Kenya’s Ministry of Health have undertaken several phases of a study on the Shang Ring, a male circumcision device, in Homa Bay County Hospital, Homa Bay County. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, EngenderHealth seeks to carry out a two phase study that shall enroll clients seeking medical male circumcision aged 10 years and above. The study seeks to recruit a total of 575 clients in two sites, Vipingo Health Centre (Kilifi) and Homa Bay County Hospital (Homa Bay). We are seeking a Lead Social Mobilizer for the each site.


The Lead Social Mobilizer will collaborate with Homa Bay and/or Kilifi County based partners to implement county-based study recruitment strategy and communication activities. The LSM will implement a social process in communities in Homa Bay or Kilifi County of collective analysis of male circumcision community problems and collective action leading to solutions of those problems, and to make that process self-sustaining and self-managing. She/he will assist with project implementation to ensure the successful and timely implementation of study recruitment activities.


RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Collaborate with Homa Bay Hospital and Vipingo Health Centre management team and community health workers, county health team and county communication coordination partners to implement Shang Ring study recruitment strategy.

  • Identify potential leaders, champions, and/or organizers who can assist with study recruitment activities;

  • Carry out general sensitization to community and community leaders, DMOH, CBO’s and Homa Bay Hospital, Vipingo Health Center, the press and other community organizations (e.g. women support groups) within at least 30 days of study approvals.

  • Explore issues with community and begin setting priorities for enhancing study recruitment through an action plan based on the study recruitment strategy.

  • Provide technical assistance to county and sub-county communication partners to implement, monitor, and report on study recruitment activities.

  • Collaborate with community based organizations to recruit, train, and supervise community mobilizers as needed to undertake interpersonal communication activities to promote healthy behaviors and use of MC services at Homa Bay County Hospital or Vipingo Health Center in Kilifi County.

  • Adapt/translate existing MC-BCC materials as needed and disseminate materials at the community and facility level.

  • Conduct follow-up meetings, as needed, with CMOH and community leaders to discuss progress and community reaction; and to work through any challenges.

  • Prepare monthly reports of activities to submit to Male Circumcision Medical Associate.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS



  • First degree in community development, social work or its equivalent

  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in community development, peer education or advocacy for health and development.

  • Ability to read and write well in local languages and English

  • Experience in training and networking;

  • Experience working with community health workers and youth;

  • Experience working on U.S. government funded projects a plus.


This is a short term engagement of up to one year.
