TITLE: Research Assistant PROGRAM: Shang Ring Research Project DUTY STATION: Homa Bay County Hospital, Kenya REPORTS TO: Medical Associate-Clinical Research

JOB SUMMARY Three randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that Male Circumcision has partial protective effect of up to 60% against heterosexual acquisition of HIV. In order to achieve the intended public health impact, as many uncircumcised men need to be circumcised within the shortest time possible. The current conventional techniques take long and in a set up where human resource is already stretched to the limit, this can proves burdensome.


EngenderHealth in collaboration with Cornell University and Kenya’s Ministry of Health have undertaken several phases of a study on the Shang Ring, a male circumcision device, in Homa Bay County Hospital, Homa Bay County. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, EngenderHealth seeks to carry out a two phase study that shall enroll clients seeking medical male circumcision aged 10 years and above. The study shall be conducted in two sites, Vipingo Health Centre (Kilifi) and Homa Bay County Hospital (Homa Bay).


Engenderhealth, therefore, is seeking to hire a Research Assistant to help in the recruitment of study participants in the study site located at Vipingo Health Centre in Kilifi County.


RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Ensure the implementation of the study is according to the study protocol.

  • Recruit, consent, and interview research participants.

  • Provide timely and accurate reports to Shang Ring Study Monitor and assist during monitoring visits with review and resolution of questions on the data forms.

  • Manage facility-based electronic data collection process, including reviewing clinical study forms for completeness and accuracy and maintaining and uploading data collected.

  • Request and dispense stipends to study participants.

  • Prepare financial reports of the site.

  • Schedule follow up of study participants and follow up with participants to honor their scheduled follow up dates.

  • Ensure only eligible participants are enrolled into the study.

  • Maintain an inventory of Shang ring devices at the site.

  • Ensure safe and confidential custody of study documents and facilitate retrieval whenever required.

  • Work with the study staff to link HIV positive clients to Comprehensive Care Centers for further HIV management.

  • Provide regular report on progress of recruitment, procedures performed and follow-up of study participants.

  • Perform all other tasks as needed to ensure smooth conduct of the study.


KNOWLEDGE; QAULIFICATIONS AND SKILLS



  • Experience in conducting interviews or focus group discussions for research purposes

  • Experience with electronic data collection desirable

  • Ability to discuss sexual behavior and HIV risk with men and women

  • Comfortable working in a health care facility or clinical environment

  • Good planning and organizational skills

  • Flexible and willing to adapt to new work demands

  • Good written and verbal skills in English and Kiswahili; dhuluo is desirable.

  • Completed post-secondary education, OR have completed KCSE with a minimum of a C+ (Plus) with a minimum of B- (minus) in English and Kiswahili, OR completed a diploma in Social Studies/Community Development or equivalent from recognized institutions.

  • Adequate knowledge on male circumcision as an intervention in the prevention of HIV-AIDS

  • Previous experience of similar roles in HIV related field and /or research will be an added advantage

  • Excellent team working skills

  • Flexible and willing to work in changing work demands without direct supervision


This is a short term engagement of up to 15 months.
