Lwala Community Alliance Job Vacancy : Managing Director

Lwala Community Alliance is seeking an entrepreneurial Managing Director who will partner directly with the Executive Director and have overall operational responsibility for the execution of programs, establishment of administrative and financial processes across the organization, and the management of staff. Since the Managing Director will spend the majority of his/her time in Kenya, serious consideration will only be given to individuals who have demonstrated success in developing an early stage NGO and have lived and worked previously in sub-Saharan Africa.


Key Responsibilities


Partnering with the Executive Director to turn the board level strategic plan into work plans, implementation strategies and reporting structures.


Monitoring the implementation of programs on the ground, ensuring and building quality in programs and tracking programs against stated grant/strategic plan objectives & annual budget.


Sample tasks include:




  • Working with Kenyan staff to develop annual work plans

  • Managing Monitoring & Evaluation and Quality Improvement initiatives

  • Acting as the main point of communication between the development team in the U.S. and the programs team in Kenya



Overseeing personnel systems, and directly managing senior program staff in Kenya.


Sample tasks include:




  • Managing personnel forecasting, hiring and orientation for Kenya-based positions

  • Working closely with Kenya Program director to ensure HR policies are adhered to

  • Overseeing Kenya-based Financial Manager’s tracking of expenses and implementation of the fiscal policy

  • Overseeing Deputy Program Director’s coordination of day-to-day programming



Responsible for overseeing overall finances including monthly budget development, cash flow forecasting and expense monitoring.


Sample tasks include:



  • Working with program staff to develop annual and monthly budgets

  • Tracking expense, income and cash flow across the organization in order to manage burn rate, fundraising projections and spending timelines

  • Providing reports to finance committee and executive director

  • Working with development staff to create budgets for prospective grants & programs


Position Requirements


Education:


MBA or MPH or other relevant graduate degree required.


Skills and Experience:



  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial experience with an organization or business that has made the leap from start up to stability.

  • Knowledge of and experience in rural health and development in resource limited settings.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in personnel management, with strong interpersonal, cross-cultural mentorship, supervision, and leadership skills.

  • Minimum 5 years managing the finance and administration of a $1 million to $5 million organization or business unit.

  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft excel and a willingness to learn to utilze Quickbooks or other accounting software.

  • Familiarity with cloud based systems like SalesForce, Evernote and Dropbox a plus.

  • Ability to travel and work evening and weekend hours as required.


Critical Qualities:



  • A passion for capacity building for a local civil society organization and a demonstrated interest in international development and justice issues.

  • Determination to execute projects at a high quality and meet deadlines despite constraints and obstacles.

  • Commitment to work at the grass roots in rural Kenya, without many amenities and limited time in urban hubs like Nairobi or Kisumu.

  • Grace and understanding in your working relationships, especially with local staff of varying levels of education and experience.

  • Integrity in personal action and word and commitment to organizational culture and values.

  • Strategic thinking with the ability to take initiative and a willingness to learn.

  • Ability to demonstrate professional decorum and a consistent and positive attitude.
