Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The UN-Habitat Office of Management internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Officer-in-Charge, Office of Management the intern will be responsible for:
- Providing assistance in financial related activities such as accounting, scrutinizing budgets and budget revision for accuracy;
- Providing assistance in ensuring proper utilization of financial resources in line with contractual agreements/Cooperation Agreements/Grants and Donor Agreements;
- Providing assistance in the administration and execution of varied operational activities;
- Providing quality and results-oriented management to the Office of the Officer-in-Charge, Office of Management;
- Review documents presented for signature for accuracy and compliance with administrative/financial rules and regulations;
- Reviewing incoming mail and determining necessary action to be taken, while flagging them to responsible officers;
- Providing follow-up action for activities that ensure the smooth running of the office of the Officer-in-Charge, Office of Management;
- Assisting with ensuring that correspondence that comes to the OiC, Office of Management is routed and acted on in an efficient and timely manner and that follow-up action has been taken;
- Assisting in preparing and improving monthly reports for senior management and executive direction on the performance of their project portfolios, as well as travel and Human Resources updates;
- Assisting in creating and maintaining an Office of Management delivery and milestone calendar;
- Assisting in creating key performance indicators for the Office of Management;
- Assisting in providing information for resource mobilization;
- Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Officer-in-Charge, Office of Management.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
- Studies in Finance/Accounting required.
Work Experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.
- Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
