Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

Ministers of Environment gathered at the 1st Universal Session of the Governing Council of UNEP said that UNEP should play an important role in interlinking environmental sustainability with SDGs because of its unique mandate as the global authority on the environment and its role in fostering the science-policy interface.

Working through processes led by member states, UN SG and relevant UN entities, major groups and stakeholders, UNEP will: Contribute to ensuring that Rio+20 Outcomes are fully embedded in the Post-2015 Agenda

Contribute to ensuring that SDGs are balanced among the three dimensions of sustainable development, are universally applicable and nationally relevant

Advocate and disseminate information on a post-2015 sustainable development agenda, building capacities of countries and other stakeholders to engage effectively in the debate

Anticipate, prepare, and enhance capacities of UNEP, in the context of a strengthened institution, to assist countries in developing and implementing the post-2015 agenda

UNEP has already made contributions to various post-Rio +20 and post-2015 related processes. With the adoption of the framework for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by the Open Working Group on 19th July 2014, the next few months will be a preparatory period for assisting Member States to conclude the final negotiations on the SDGs, and to make far reaching decisions on its means of implementation (particularly in the areas of finance, technology transfer, capacity building, partnerships, monitoring, reporting, and accountability). In this period UNEP will support the SG’s guidance to achieve a single Post-2015 agenda by advocating for and supporting a true convergence of processes that ensures a seamless transition from MDGs to the SDG agenda.
