Job Description


RTI’s International Education Division is supporting education development around the world by strengthening education policy, management and practice in order to achieve measurable improvement in teaching and learning. The International Education Division is seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Education Specialist to support an anticipated Early Childhood Development (ECD) project in Kenya. This project will be focused on improving the quality of ECD systems and instruction. The instruction will be focused on development of early reading, mathematics, psychosocial and health skills and concepts. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, this position will focus on strengthening Early Childhood Development (ECD) education programmes and materials, in local languages and English; develop and support ECD maths programmes, provide support to the ECD system at the national and county level, and support a system that can support teachers for improving both classroom environment and practices.


Responsibilities:



  • Provide technical assistance for the development and management of early childhood development education activities and identify strategies to accelerate/improve delivery of services.

  • Provide technical assistance for pedagogical design, curriculum structure, and teacher training strategies.

  • Identify, develop, and harmonize effective early childhood literacy and numeracy instructional approaches and materials.

  • Provide technical assistance in the development of reading and mathematics learning materials for early childhood development students and teachers.

  • Collaborate with field teams to support MOEST county officers and TSC county officers to implement the instructional approaches. Support effective local capacity building.

  • Conduct regular visits to maintain a clear understanding of field issues and to ensure common understanding.

  • Conduct and organize field visits to schools and local project sites to provide ongoing technical support, to evaluate program effectiveness, identify obstacles and institute remedial measures, if needed.

  • Regularly support progress monitoring and reporting; and maintaining productive relationships with counterparts in ministries, funders, partners, and across RTI.

  • Support development of effective communication materials, advocacy activities and social mobilization programs

  • Supervise the technical teams in Nairobi and the 2 field offices to implement the technical activities of the programme


Qualifications


Requirements:



  • Master’s degree in education or related field; additional curriculum course work preferred;

  • Minimum six years of experience in management and coordination of development projects in education sector;

  • Significant experience in education development for ECD (specifically in materials development);

  • Track record of performance excellence meeting targets and objectives;

  • Materials development and design experience;

  • Experience in planning and coordinating project and program field work;

  • Experience with donor -funded projects preferred;

  • Strong analytical and planning skills;

  • Evident curriculum development skills;

  • Strong writing and data analysis abilities;

  • Excellent managerial, supervisory, and interpersonal skills;

  • Strong organizational skills in managing activities of demanding programs;

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and demanding timeframes;

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;

  • Understanding of health and/or nutrition field preferred

  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili required.
